International Judo Federation Competition History: Angelica Delgado IJF Profile
Personal
A two-time Olympian, Delgado competed at both the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games and remains Team USA's highest ranked athlete in the world. Delgado credits her father, Miguel Delgado, as the most influential person in her judo career. Miguel Delgado fled Cuba in the 1980s in search of political and religious freedom and made his way to Miami where he counted his old judo gi as one of the few possessions he took with him to America. "Without him I would’ve never put on a gi. My father was on the National Cuban Team for judo and when I was nine years old he began to teach me in the backyard of our house.” Although Delgado says qualifying for the Olympic Games twice was the highlight of her career so far, she also notes that her favorite judo moment is "Anytime I overcome adversity. It reaffirms my purpose to be the best. Also, the moment I step on the mat and everything becomes quiet and I become hyper-focused and aware.”
Delgado, who graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor's degree in psychology in 2021, married her former Senior World teammate, Alex Turner, in September of 2022. The 11-time Senior World Team member remains the only member of Team USA to have medaled at a Grand Slam event since 2016 and holds three podium finishes at Grand Slam tournaments as well as five Grand Prix medals.
