Personal

A high school wrestler, Hawthorne qualified for the state championships three times while competing at F. L. Schlagle High School. Soon after being introduced to judo, Hawthorne won bronze at the 2006 IBSA World Student & Youth Games. He went on to win multiple gold medals in various domestic and international events during the leadup to the 2012 Paralympic Games where he finished seventh. After narrowly missing qualification for the 2016 and 2020 Games, Hawthorne has returned to make a bid to represent Team USA for a second time.
