Mariah Holguin places fifth leading USA Judo in 2021 International Judo Federation Baku (Azerbaijan) Grand Slam, November 5-7

Mariah Holguin placed fifth in the women’s under 57kg division to lead USA Judo in this weekend’s IJF Baku Grand Slam event, November 5-7 in Azerbaijan. Holguin defeated Brazil’s Jessica Pereira to win Pool B, advancing to the semifinal where she fell to eventual gold medalist Momo Tamaoki of Japan. In the repechage, Holguin faced Belgium’s Mina Libeer who captured the bronze medal.

John Jayne also represented USA Judo in the event defeating Mongolia’s Tengis Batsaikhan in the opening round of the men’s -90kg division. In the round of 32, Jayne fell to Mehdiyev Mammadali of the host country of Azerbaijan who went on to win the silver medal.
