(Colorado Springs, CO) – Two weeks after their podium finishes at the Senior Pan Am-Oceania Championships, Mariah Holguin (San Antonio, TX / Universal Judo) and David Terao (Fairfax, VA) each advanced to the round of 16 at the final Grand Slam of the Olympic qualifying season in Astana, Kazakhstan on Friday.

2024 Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam Results

Both of Holguin’s matches in the 57 kg division would come down to penalties as she won her round of 32 match on penalties over Manita Shrestha Pradhan (NEP), but lost on penalties in the 16 to 2023 Dushanbe Grand Prix Champion Shukurjon Aminova (UZB).

A silver medalist in the 60 kg division at the Senior Pan Ams, Terao was thrown in the second minute of his round of 32 match against Tugol Kanatbek Uulu (KGZ) for a waza-ari score. Terao continued to press his opponent, throwing Uulu for ippon with a tomoe nage (circular sacrifice throw) late in the second minute. In the round of 16, Terao had a rematch of his Senior Pan Am final against Michel Augusto (BRA). Terao took the 2024 Portugal Grand Prix silver medalist into Golden Score (sudden death overtime) before dropping the match on penalties.
