Angelica Delgado eliminated in Round of 16

Angelica Delgado wins first match, but eliminated in Round of 16; Colton Brown next up at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Nippon Budokan
TOKYO, Japan – Two-time Olympian (2016 and 2020) Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla./Coconut Creek, Fla./Ki-itsu-sai National Training Site/New York Athletic Club/Florida International University) won her first bout of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 before being eliminated in the Round of 16 today at the historic Nippon Budokan.
Competing in the under 52kg class, Delgado defeated Portugal's Joana Ramos by ippon in the golden score period, but fell by ippon to Reka Pupp of Hungary.
“Definitely a match I could have won,” said Delgado. “I felt really good winning the first one, especially against someone I’ve never beaten before. I thought it was going to continue the second match, but it just didn’t pan out like that.”
Team USA will continue judo competition on Wednesday, July 28, when Colton Brown, (Piscataway, N.J./Bridgewater, N.J./New York Athletic Club/San Jose State University) competes in the men's under 90kg class. Besides being his second Olympic Games (2016 and 2020), Wednesday will have a special meaning for Brown as he will be competing at the Olympic Games in the same venue where his mentor and college coach at San Jose State University in San Jose, Calif., Yoshihiro “Yosh” Uchida coached the 1964 United States Olympic Judo Team. Uchida, now 101 years old will be intently watching from his home in San Jose. He had planned to be in Tokyo in person to watch Colton as he did in Rio 2016, but was forced to make other plans with organizers announced that there would be no spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Tokyo 2020ne Olympic Games Judo tournament comes following a three-year Olympic qualification process.Joining Delgado and Brown on the U.S. Olympic Team are fellow Olympic newcomers Nefeli Papadakis (Gurnee, Ill./Wolf Judo Club/ College of Lake County/DeVry University) in the women’s under 78kg division on Thursday, July 29th and Nina Cutro-Kelly (Albany, N.Y./Selma, Texas/Universal Judo/ Universite de Rennes - Rennes, France in the women’s over 78kg division on Friday, July 30, 2021.Coaches for the team are Jhonny Prado (Coral Springs, Fla./ Ki-itsu-sai National Training Site) and Justin Flores (Carlsbad, Calif./Studio 540).
