Stevenson Wins Silver on Final Day of Veterans Worlds

Friday's final day of the International Judo Federation Veterans World Championships in Paris resulted in the fifth medal for U.S. athletes, a silver medal by Shandra Stevenson (Roswell, Ga. / Fox Valley Judo & Jujitsu Club of Wisconsin). It was the second straight silver medal at the event for Stevenson and her third career Veterans Worlds medal, having won a bronze in 2016.

Stevenson went 3-1 on the day in the F5 (females 50-54) 78 kg division. She notched back-to-back victories by ippon (instant win) over Beata Bernat (POL) and Nathanaelle Scarabello (FRA) to reach the medal round. In the semifinals, Stevenson scored two waza-aris (half-points) to secure a win over Sonia Babin (FRA) and advance to the final against Annika Molin (SWE). In the final, Molin was able to throw Stevenson for ippon to claim the gold medal.

The other top-8 finish for the U.S. on Friday came from Carol Boulet (Elma, N.Y. / Kin-Tora Judo Club), who placed seventh in the F7 (females 60-64) 52 kg division.
