One of the athletes making their international debuts was 17-year-old Derick Thomas, III (El Cerrito, Calif. / Berkeley Genco Judo Club) in the men’s 81kg division. After receiving a first-round bye, Thomas faced 15th-ranked and 2024 bronze medalist Inomjon Bakhodirov (UZB) in the round of 32. Thomas more than held his own against the more experienced Bakhodirov, giving up just a yuko through the first three minutes before Bakhodirov won by ippon (instant win) with a submission hold with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation time (MATCH VIDEO). Bakhodirov would go on to win the gold medal in the 81kg division.
Lily Oh (Ashburn, Va. / SportJudo), 16, competed in her second Cadet World on Friday in the women’s 63kg and matched up against world #9 Nadia Wozniczko (POL) in the round of 32. The Polish judoka wasted no time in taking the fight to the American, scoring a yuko (partial point) eight seconds in and then securing the victory by ippon with an okuri-eri-jime (chokehold) at the 42-second mark (MATCH VIDEO).
Similarly, Bobodzhan Sharopov (TJK) took early control of his round of 64 fight against 16-year-old Ivan Baranau (Levittown, Pa. / Yawara Force Judo/Sambo Club), who was making his international debut in the men's 73kg division. Sharopov scored a waza-ari (half point) just six seconds into the match using an ashi-guruma (foot technique) throw, then 30 seconds later, he ended the match by ippon with a sumi-otoshi (hand technique) throw (MATCH VIDEO).
Seventeen-year-old Ellianna Abbott (Rayne, La. / Louisiana Judo), competing in her second Cadet World Championships, faced Yuliana Rusinova (BUL) in the women's 57kg round of 64. In an exciting finish, Abbott recorded the first point of the match with just 25 seconds left in regulation on a harai-goshi-gaeshi (foot technique) throw for yuko, but Rusinova responded 13 seconds later with an uchi-mata (foot technique) throw for waza-ari to take the victory (MATCH VIDEO).
Also competing in the women's 57kg competition on Friday was 15-year-old Logyn Lynn Puahala (Aiea, Hawaii / Hawaii Kaikaku Judo Club), taking part in her first international event against Hanna Babulfath (SWE) in the round of 64. In the second minute of the contest, Babulfath threw Puahala for a waza-ari and then transitioned into an osaekomi (pinning technique) for her second waza-ari and the win (MATCH VIDEO).
The final day of individual competition is on Saturday with six Americans in action: Chrystal Monthe Noussi (Fort Worth, Texas / Fort Worth Judo Club) and Chloe Williams (Stafford, Va. / High Noon Judo) in the women's 70kg; Rhadi Ferguson, Jr. (Tampa, Fla. / High Noon Judo) in the women's +70kg; Nicholas Zadvinskiy (Staten Island, N.Y. / Cranford JKC) in the men's 90kg; and Judah Harris (Kenly, N.C. / Black Ice Judo) and Kanta Ueyama (Burbank, Calif. / Los Angeles Tenri Judo Dojo) in the men's +90kg.
