Grand Prix Portugal

The 2022 International Judo Federation World Tour kicked off in Almada, Portugal, this past weekend at the Grand Prix Portugal 2022 and two American Judokas started off their seasons very strong.

A delegation of nine USA Judo representatives competed under coach and two-time Olympian, Colton Brown.

L.A. Smith III won a bronze medal in the -100kg category after beating Adil Karimili from Azerbaijan (AZE). Previous wins were against Ailton Cardosa (POR), Joris Agbegneneou (FRA), Jorge Fonseca (POR) to earn his way to the bronze medal match. See competition at IJF.org.

Junior athlete, Christian Konoval, (100+kg) also had a respectable finish for Team USA by placing 5th in this weekend’s tournament. He had three wins in the bracket against Imran Yusifov (AZE), Minjong Kim (KOR) and Guerman Andreev (FRA). See competition at IJF.org.
