Pan American Games Results

The USA Judo team secured one silver, three bronze, and three 5^th place finishes at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, on August 8-11, 2019.

The USA Team started strong on day one with a bronze medal win for Adonis Diaz in the -60kg weight class. A lost to Brazil in Diaz’s first match placed him into repechage, where he would face Vergara of Panama. A win by ippon secured his spot in the bronze medal match where he would go on to defeat Calle of Peru.

Noticeably missing from the roster on the first day of competition was USA Judo’s #1 rank, Angelica Delgado who was injured in a training camp in Israel and did not make the trip to Lima, Peru.

On the second day of competition, Nick Delpopolo shared a similar story capturing a bronze for Team USA. An emotional loss in the first round placed Delpopolo directly into repechage. Delpopolo was able to regroup his focus to defeat his next two opponents, from Canada and Venezuela, to find his place on the medal podium.

Similar to her teammates, Hannah Martin face a quick loss in the first round of competition on Saturday. Martin quickly bounced back to claim her bronze medal with a win over De Lucia from Argentina in repechage and Awiti of Mexico in the bronze medal match.

Also, on Saturday, the third day of competition, Jack Hatton won by ippon in his first-round match. But a tough loss to Brazil sent Hatton to the Bronze medal match where he came short for a 5^th place finish.

On Sunday, L.A. Smith won silver on the final day of competition. Smith would win his first two fights against Esquivel of Mexico and Angulo of Ecuador, both by ippon. In the -100kg men’s finals, Smith fell short to Briceno of Chile to claim his silver medal.

Both Nina Cutro-Kelly and Ajax Tadehara placed 5^th on Sunday in Lima. After an easy first win, Cutro-Kelly would fall short in the semi-finals to Ortiz of Cuba and the Bronze medal match to Bolivar of Peru. Tadehara won his first match to Alvarado of Peru, but a loss in the quarterfinals forced him into repechage. A win against Argentina sent him into the finals to fight for bronze. A tough loss to Brazil resulted in his 5^th place finish.
