Thirteen Medals Highlight an Extremely Successful Weekend for Team USA at the Junior Pan American Championships
    July 2, 2017 - Cancun, Mexico

John Jayne and Kathy Lieby's Gold Medal performances capped what was a very successful weekend for Team USA in Cancun, Mexico at the Junior Pan American Championships. After two days of competition, the United States delegation finished second overall out of 16 participating countries, behind only Brazil. This result shows the progress that the USA Judo Junior Program has made over the last twelve months. At the 2016 Junior Pan American Championships in CĂ³rdoba, Argentina, Team USA earned 4 medals ( 1 Silver and 3 Bronze ), finishing 12th overall. This year the group leaves Cancun with 13 medals, including two Gold, five Silver and six Bronze.

" This tournament was a great display of the improved quality and depth of our Junior program. I couldn't be more proud of the group who represented us in Cancun. They behaved like champions both on and off of the mat.", said Brett Wolf, head coach of the team.

There were countless highlights for the team of 27 athletes. Some of them include:

    - John Jayne defeating Brazilian, William Junior in 16 seconds in the Gold Medal match of the IJF Junior 100kg division. John executed a perfect yoko tomoe nage to secure the victory.
    - Kathy Lieby using guile, experience and determination to edge Agustina De Lucia from Argentina in the Gold Medal match of the IJF Junior 57kg division.
    - Liam Wright making the 73kg Finals in both the Cadet and IJF age categories. While ending up with two Silver Medals, Liam proved that he will be a serious threat to make some noise next month at the Cadet World Championships in Santiago, Chile.
    - Victoria Goncalves using fantastic ashi waza and mat presence to take home the Silver Medal in the IJF 48kg division.

Many of these athletes will be representing Team USA later on this year at the Cadet World Championships in Santiago, Chile ( August ) and the Junior World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia ( October ).
