2022 Kata World Championships Results

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Fourteen members of Team USA competed at the Kata World Championships in Krakow, Poland on Tuesday and Wednesday with two pairs earning sixth-place finishes in their group.

Competing at their sixth straight Kata Worlds together, Lisa Capriotti (Charleston, S.C. / Aspire Judo) and Robert Gouthro (Charleston, S.C. / Aspire Judo) earned a 476.0 score in kime no kata, placing sixth in their group. The duo placed 11th in the preliminary round across the two groups with the top six overall advancing to the finals.

The husband and wife duo of Frederick Dagdagan (Los Angeles, Calif. / Sawtelle Judo) and Lee Pasteris (Los Angeles, Calif. / Sawtelle Judo) came into the Worlds after winning bronze at the Pan Am Championships in May. Dagdagan and Pasteris scored 368.0 in the preliminary round of the ju no kata, finishing sixth in their group and 16th across both groups.

Team USA fielded three pairs in the ju no kata event with Doug Tono (Skokie, Ill. / Tohkon Judo) and Caryn Tono (Skokie, Ill. / Tohkon Judo) scoring 337.5 and the duo of Lori Latimer (Upper Darby, Pa.) and Christine Levine (Philadelphia, Pa. / El Idrissi Judo Academy) scoring 333.5. The Kata Worlds finished a packed week of competition for Tono who won silver at the Veteran Worlds at the same venue last week.

Doug Newcomer (Denton, Texas / Denton Jr. Optimist Judo Club) and Ray Cox (Denton, Texas / Denton Jr. Optimist Judo Club) scored 373.5 in the katame no kata event, placing ninth in their group and 15th across both groups in just their second Kata World Championships together where Cox was one of the event’s youngest athletes at 23 years old.

Mary Wakabayashi (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and Pamela Moye (Los Angeles, Calif. / Sawtelle Judo) also competed in katame no kata, scoring 283.0 after Moye’s fifth-place finish at the Veteran World Championships on Sunday.

Bronze medalists in the kime no kata competition at the 2022 Pan Ams, Gerardo Tello (Miami, Fla. / A. Kolychkine Judo Foundation) and Sergio Suguieda (Miami, Fla. / A. Kolychkine Judo Foundation) competed in nage no kata in Krakow, scoring 364.5.

Nearly 250 athletes from 26 nations competed in the Kata World Championships which also included a U23 category for the first time. While European nations won 10 of the tournament’s 15 medals, Japan stood on top of the leaderboard with two gold medals and a silver. The Pan American region also reached the podium with a gold medal from Colombia and bronze from Canada.
