(Colorado Springs, CO) – John Jayne (Chicago, IL) came away from the Senior World Championships in Abu Dhabi with a bittersweet experience following his 90 kg competition on Wednesday.

Coming off a silver medal finish last month at the Senior Pan Am-Oceania Championships, Jayne hoped to build on the result in his fourth Senior World appearance.

However, his day ended early following a loss when he was thrown twice in the final 90 seconds of his round of 64 match against 2023 Junior World silver medalist Vugar Talibov (AZE).

Despite the loss in the final major Olympic qualifier, Jayne is expected to move into a continental quota position at the conclusion of the Senior World Championships as one of the top athletes in the Pan Am region when the updated Olympic Ranking Lists are released by the International Judo Federation.

A two-time Senior Pan Am Team member, Melissa Myers (Burnt Hills, NY / Jason Morris Judo Center) made her Senior World debut in the 70 kg division on Wednesday. Myers fought a solid match against three-time Grand Slam medalist Katie Jemima Yeats-Brown (GBR) in the round of 64 where she took the match to the ground and made several armbar attempts before dropping the match on penalties in Golden Score (sudden death overtime).

The final day of individual competition will take place on Thursday when Phil Horiuchi (West Covina, CA / LA Tenri Judo) will compete in the +100 kg category.
