Tono and Cabrera Win Silver at Veterans Worlds
by Bill Kellick
The final two days of the International Judo Federation Veterans World Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, resulted in silver medals for Douglas Tono (Skokie, Ill. / Tohkon Judo Academy) and Margarita Cabrera (Miami, Fla. / A. Kolychkine Judo Foundation). It was the seventh Veterans World Championships medal of Tono's career and marked the third straight year he has reached the podium at the event. For Cabrera, it was her fifth podium appearance at the event and first since 2019. She won four straight gold medals between 2016-2019.
Tono went 3-1 on Wednesday in the M8 (males 65-69) 66 kg division. He defeated Stanislaw Pazgan (POL) by waza-ari (half-point) and Denis Rinck (FRA) by ippon (instant win) to reach the semifinal round. After beating Eduardo Garcia (POR) in Golden Score (sudden-death overtime) to reach the final, Tono lost by yuko (partial point) to Rudolf Czempik (GER).
Cabrera lost her opening match on Thursday in the women's F5 (females 50-54) 70 kg division by yuko to Murielle Godot (FRA), but rebounded by pinning Sonia Boucher (FRA) for ippon in the second minute of her next match.
