The 2023 World Championships will be held in Doha, Qatar May 7-14, 2023. USA Judo will select the team consisting of 18 total athletes, top 9 male and top 9 female, based off the current IJF World Ranking List (WRL) that includes all results through March 6, 2023. This list will be used to identify the 9 highest ranking male athletes and the 9 highest ranking female athletes. USA Judo will use the rankings based on IJF World Ranking List points (WRL). All selections will be based on the number of accrued points per weight division on the IJF World Ranking List (WRL).
Under the IJF 2022-2024 Rules, athletes must also be in the Top 100 on the Senior WRL (as of April 3, 2023) or the Top 16 on the Junior WRL (as of March 27, 2023). USA Judo will award team selection based on the Senior WRL, with additional slots will to be filled by the Junior WRL, if applicable. If an athlete falls out of the Top 100 on the Senior WRL (as of April 3, 2023) or the Top 16 on the Junior WRL (as of March 27, 2023) after the March 6, 2023, selection period, they will not be allowed to participate due to the IJF 2022-2024 rules and the spot will be given to the next highest qualified athlete.
There will be a maximum of 2 athletes in any single weight category. If a category has already been filled by 2 athletes, no other athletes may be considered for that category, unless there is a subsequent withdrawal from one of the two occupied slots. In the case of such a withdrawal, the next eligible person on the IJF World Ranking List, will be selected to the team providing their weight division has unfilled slots. This will continue until all 9 slots are filled for men and for women.
These athletes will be the selected to the 2023 Senior World Championships Team.
The above criteria is based on the current IJF eligibility rules. If the IJF changes eligibility rules USA Judo reserves the right to modify the 2023 Senior World Championships Team criteria.
